That's right, Doom. If this game hadn't came out, you wouldn't have your precious Halo 3. If it wasn't for this game, any FPS would be no where near as popular as this game.
It was made back in 1992, and I still play it with source ports. Skulltag is the best, adding all kinds of new features and allowing you to make your own maps for it.
Anyone else still play this classic?

Even if Doom had never been released, another game would have come along instead.
Besides, if it weren't for PacMan you would never have your precious Doom.

Shut up. Doom wasn't even the first FPS.

Please, do show me where I said it was the FPS.
Oh wait, I didn't, did I?
Doom is the game that revolutionized FPS. I never said it was the first.

You still used a logical fallacy. Just because Doom came out doesn't mean that Halo 3 would not come out otherwise.

The Halo Trilogy is based off of Marathon. Marathon is based off of Doom. No Doom = No Marathon. No Marathon = No Halo Trilogy.

Your logic fails.

Well, Doom used a revolutionary engine that basically started the gaming revolution.

This thread got off to a totally stupid start.
Sure, its true that Doom paved the way for the newer games, that it used an amazing revolutionary engine, and that its a superb game in itself, but that doesnt mean its the be all and end all.
Carmack and Romero made Wolf3D before Doom, Commander Keen before Wolf3D, Commander Keen is a platformer, platformers probably started with the really old arcade Donkey Kong game...you see how far you can go back here?
If Donkey Kong hadnt been made, the Johns may not have been inspired to make other games that preceeded Doom, so then NOTHING in the gaming industry would exist as far as FPS games are concerned? Thats retarded.
Like somebody else said, if Doom hadnt been made something else would have eventually, and we'd probably be arguing about that one.
That said, Doom is one of my favourites and did totally turn the gaming industry for the better. It helped start online gaming, is due in some way to the popularising of Direct X, and a host of other things. The bottom line though is that its a really fucking awesome game. Tough as hell, and still great fun a few decades on.
To talk in absolutes though, is idiotic and short-sighted.

Every game made in the past contributes to the games made today.
Doom might of been the bigger guns, but it definitly wasn't the only one.
Duke Nukem was a big one too. As said before, Wolfenstein 3D.

I downloaded it on Xbox Live Arcade and played it constantly for about a week.
I loved that game back in the day.
